On 24 March 2013, a day after the French government confirmed the death of Abu Zeid, the veteran fighter and leader of the Tariq Ibn Zyad brigade, security sources in Algeria leaked to Ennahar TV that his succession was settled. According to this unnamed source, Yahya Abu al-Hamman, historic leader of the al-Forkane brigade and Emir of the Sahara since September 2012, will succeed Abu Zeid, who was killed in a French bombardment of the Ifoghas mountains in late February 2013. This announcement should still be viewed cautiously as al Qaeda in the Lands of the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) has not officially released any information regarding either the death of Abu Zeid or a possible successor.
