Interconnected SystemsCritical infrastructures broadly refer to a nation's physical and virtual private and public interconnected systems that are essential to national security, national economic security and/or national public health and safety.  These infrastructures can be naturally-existing, such as ground water resources or manmade, such as electric grids. Different countries have different working definitions of critical infrastructures that reflect their own national strategic interests and vulnerabilities. The definition of critical infrastructure for the United States is stated in the USA PATRIOT Act of 2001 which was passed in response to the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.
