The Prediction of the Caliphate Comes to PassThe Islamic State (IS) successes in Iraq coupled with the announcement of the return of the Islamic Caliphate, on 29 June 2014, emphasised a schism in the jihadist world that is present in almost all traditional al Qaeda affiliated groups, namely an old guard versus a new generation of jihadists. The announcement gave way for an IS twitter campaign in which each statement of support for the IS became “headlines”, ironically comparable to a pre-election campaign in Western style democracies. Pledges of loyalty and support were forthcoming, not from organisations but individuals. These individuals claimed membership to groups such as al Qaeda in the Lands of the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), Tehreek-e-Taliban Islami Pakistan (TTIP/TTP) and Abu Sayyaf.
