Evolution From Being India-centric to Global Jihadist GroupFounded in 1987 in Eastern Afghanistan, Lashkar-e-Taiba remained relatively unknown outside of South Asia until the notorious 2008 Mumbai massacre. Although the group had long been carrying out attacks in Indian-held Jammu and Kashmir, the brazen three day assault on the largest city in India elevated the profile of the group and indicated that Lashkar-e-Taiba had the capacity to successfully carry out complex and deadly attacks abroad. Although many analysts have expressed concerns that Lashkar-e-Taiba could become the “new al-Qaeda,”[1] recent events indicate that this hypothesis is likely not only true, but the evolution of the group from an India-centric to a truly global and anti-Western jihadist group may in fact be on a more accelerated time-scale than previously thought.
