Pejoritive Overtones of the word "Terrorism"Terrorist acts represent a unique form of crime by dint of their political content. Terrorism is thus differentiated from other criminal uses of violence by the political end-state which is used by the perpetrator to justify his or her actions. This is demonstrated by the fact that, given its pejorative overtones, many scholars do not use the word terrorism to describe the phenomenon they study, but choose instead the label: political violence. The terrorist uses violence to effect political change, with “political” understood in the broadest sense to include the social and economic, as per Max Weber’s stratification of human society. If the terrorist is not motivated in his use of the ‘gun and the bomb’ by a desire to change history and obtain power, but solely by the goal of accruing wealth or instilling random fear into a society, then that person is either a common criminal or a serial killer.
