Nigerian Prisons and Terrorism: An Emerging Security Challenge

Recent Phenomenon Until mid-2009, global problems of terrorism in Nigeria in general and direct attacks to the prisons in particular were an un-heard of phenomenon. The condemned inmates and lifers, as well as the inmates awaiting trial, were convicted or accused of armed robbery, kidnapping, rape, murder, oil bunkering, cultism in institutions of higher learning, and activities of militants in the oil rich Niger Delta area. The militants based in the southern part of Nigeria have clearly defined grievances and demands, and their subversive activities are designed to draw attention to the neglect and devastation of their environment caused by oil drilling and explorative activities of the multi-national oil companies.
