BackgroundOn November 2, 2013, two French nationals, Ghislaine Dupont, a senior correspondent for Radio France Internationale (RFI), and Claude Verlon, a production technician with the same agency were kidnapped and killed in Mali. The kidnapping itself, presents no surprise. The tactic, which is most often aimed at foreigners in the Sahel, is commonplace.[1] What is surprising is the execution of the victims within hours of the event not only without warning but also without any ransom demands.
