The increase in teenagers leaving for Syria is attributed to highly effective organised recruitment networks in France. French authorities refer to approximately 700 French jihadists in the Middle East and North Africa. Of the estimated 350 to 500 French foreign fighters currently supporting Islamist groups in Syria, at least 63 are believed to be female, of which six are minors. According to a report published in the Guardian (UK) women and girls appear to make up about 10% of those leaving Europe, North America and Australia to support jihadist groups. The report refers to France having the highest number of female jihadist recruits.
