IntroductionA Europol report published in May 2014 listed Spain as one of the EU's terrorism hubs, with only France and the UK more at risk of terror attacks. According to the report there were 33 terrorist attacks and 90 arrests for terror-related activities in Spain in 2013. Six of the 33 attacks in Spain were carried out by left-wing groups, and 26 by separatist groups. Since the 2004 Madrid train bombings, which killed 191 people and injured more than 1,800 others, Spanish law enforcement forces have arrested 472 suspected al Qaeda militants or collaborators. During 2014, Spain’s continued vulnerability to terrorism is seen in the arrest and break-up of jihadist cells/networks accused of abetting the Islamic State of Iraq and ash Sham (Islamic State of Iraq, ISIS or ISIL) and Jabhat al-Nusra (JN).
