Unstable Political EnvironmentSince winning its independence from France in 1960, the Central African Republic (CAR) has had a checkered history of coups, military strongmen, poor governance as well as being a victim of its geography. The ouster of President Bozize in April 2013 by the Seleka coalition, which was a coalition of groups from both Chad and the CAR, intensified the unstable political environment. Before he was ousted, President Bozize took no action to mitigate the situation, allowing the instability to fester from 2007-2012. Although there were agreements on power sharing, integration of fighters in the armed forces and even formation of a legitimate political party between the Bozize Government and the Union of Democratic Forces for Unity (UDFR), there was little progress until January 2012.
