The 969 Movement, which Ashin Wirathu launched in 2001, draws its inspiration from fascism and Nazism and is racist, calling for boycott of anything Muslim. The apartheid 969 creed led to sharp increase in anti-Muslim violence in Myanmar, especially after the Bamiyan statues were destroyed by Taliban in March of 2001.
