White Shroud is a guerrilla warfare group of approximately 300 men that attacks Islamic State (IS) fighters in Albukamal (Deir al-Zor province in Syria), which is an IS stronghold. The group relies on guerrilla warfare tactics and claimed to have killed more than 100 IS fighters. According to the group leader, Abu Aboud (not real name), the name White Shroud is a reference to the death shroud that waits IS fighters responsible for crimes against the Syrian people. Groups similar in objectives and tactics have become active in Syria, such as the “Phantom Brigade”, “The Brigade of the Angel of Death” and Tawhid Squadrons. Hence the name “white shroud” is also often used to explain the low profile attacks of these groups rather than an organised group.Centre of OperationsWhite Shroud groups operate in the Deir al-Zor province in Syria (Iraqi border):

Groups and individuals included in TRAC's database range from actual perpetrators of social or political violence to more passive groups that support or condone (perhaps unwittingly) such violence. The spectrum of violence represented by these groups is vast, from Jihadists who bomb train stations to financial institutions that transfer funds. Some groups that originally engaged in violence but have since become legitimate political parties are included to provide historical perspective. TRAC is in no way attempting to determine whether groups or individuals are terrorists -- only to convey reported information about their activities and official State status. While TRAC attempts to ensure the accuracy of its TRAC database, the entries in the database are from numerous different sources.
