On 31 March 2014 al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) announced the formation of a new armed group called "Ansar al Shariah in the Central Regions." AQAP’s statement referred to the new group's objective as to counter the Shiite Houthi rebels that are based in Yemen's northern Sa'adah province. AQAP added that the formation was necessitated due to the Yemeni government involvement in a plot to strengthen the Shiite rebels. The statement specifically refers to a raid by the Yemeni military on 28 March 2014 on an AQAP apartment in al-Dalea province during which two AQAP fighters were killed. According to AQAP, the incident served as evidence of a plot by the Yemen government against al-Qaeda that serves Houthi interests.Centre of OperationsThe group's focus will be in Yemen's northern Sa'adah province.
