Time Line of EventsIn 1994 cattle ranchers Dwight Hammond and his son, Steven Hammond obstructed the construction of a fence intended to stop their cattle from illegally grazing on Federal land. Ultimately they were convicted of arson and sentenced to five years imprisonment.In 2015 they appealed their case to the U.S. Supreme Court which sent it back to the lower court and the five year sentence was upheld.By 02 January 2016 a group supporters of the Hammond family gathered. They began to occupy a building on Malheur National Wildlife Refuge over holidays without incident, establishing an armed check-point at the gate. At least 3 of the participants (Ammon, Mel, Ryan) are from the Cliven Bundy family.
