The leader Shamil Basayev was an active Chechen rebel and war lord as early as the mid 1980's during the Soviet Union and Boris Yeltsin's government; It is unclear if this group was organizationally structured to survive Basayev's death in 2006 and as such its unclear if the group is still active without its main leader.
