Dylann Roof, 21, was charged with the murders of nine black people at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina on June 17, 2015. Roof, a native of Columbia, SC, reportedly left several survivors so they could tell authorities his stated reason for the murders: racism. He targeted that specific church likely because of its historic association with African Americans’ struggle for equality. Much discussion ensued among politicians and the press as to whether this constituted a terrorist attack. TRAC normally does not consider attacks by "lone nuts" as terrorist. "Lone Wolves," on the other hand often are politically motivated. Similarly, racist attacks fall somewhere between outright terrorism (Oklahoma City bombing) and political violence for the purpose of changing society.
