Full report on ICCTThere are approximately 5000 Sunni foreign fighters in Syria. These fighters join battalions, also known as ‘muhajireen’ units, which in turn mostly support either the Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham (ISIS) or Jabhat al-Nusrah (JN). The word ‘muhajireen’ refers to a specific unit of foreign fighters, with the Arabic word ‘muhajir’ referring to an individual who makes a spiritual migration, which in the Syria context, is jihad. These battalions predominantly serve as additional fighting forces to main groups, such as the ISIS and JN.
