These fighters join battalions, also known as ‘muhajireen’ units, which in turn mostly support either the Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham (ISIS) or Jabhat al-Nusrah (JN). The word ‘muhajireen’ refers to a specific unit of foreign fighters, with the Arabic word ‘muhajir’ referring to an individual who makes a spiritual migration, which in the Syria context, is jihad. These battalions predominantly serve as additional fighting forces to main groups, such as the ISIS and JN.
