On 28 January 2017, a former leader of Ahrar al-Sham, Abu Jaber Hashem al-Sheikh who broke from the group in December 2016, was announced as leader of a new coalition of groups that has joined with Jabhat Fateh al-Sham (JFS, formerly al-Qaeda's Al-Nusra Front) called Hayy'at Tahrir al-Sham-HTS (Assembly for the Liberation of the Levant).
