On 19 June 2016, the formation of the Alliance Nationale pour la Souvegarde de l’Identité Peule et la Restauration de la Justice (ANSIPRJ - the National Alliance for the Protection of Fulani Identity and the Restoration of Justice) was announced. The National Alliance is according to media statements a political-armed group that seeks the protection of the Fulani people without demanding a seperate Fulani state. The group also denounced any links with Islamic extremist groups active in Mali. According to the group's leader, Oumar Aldjana, the group's ojective is to defend the Fulani people of Mali against Mali security forces and militia groups. He also claimed that the National Alliance is comprised of approximately 700 fighters.
