The Oath Keepers is a group comprised primarily of current and former military members and first responders. As their name indicates, the group describes its purpose as encouraging these individuals to uphold the various oaths they swore to defend the United States or the States for which they work. While they are careful to advocate only legally protected action, their extremism is implicit throughout their communications. For example, a page within the group’s official webpage describes the “Ten Orders We Will Not Obey,” which include “We will NOT obey any order to disarm the American people” (implying that no order to disarm could be legitimate); “We will NOT obey orders to invade and subjugate any state that asserts its sovereignty and declares the national government to be in violation of the compact by which that state entered the Union (implying that secession, such as the secession of the Confederate states prior to the American Civil War, is a legitimate and legal…

Groups and individuals included in TRAC's database range from actual perpetrators of social or political violence to more passive groups that support or condone (perhaps unwittingly) such violence. The spectrum of violence represented by these groups is vast, from Jihadists who bomb train stations to financial institutions that transfer funds. Some groups that originally engaged in violence but have since become legitimate political parties are included to provide historical perspective. TRAC is in no way attempting to determine whether groups or individuals are terrorists -- only to convey reported information about their activities and official State status.
