Theodore John "Ted" Kaczynski is an American terrorist, mathematician and social critic. Between 1978 and 1995, Kaczynski engaged in a nationwide bombing campaign against modern technology, planting or mailing numerous home-made bombs, killing three people and injuring 23 others. Kaczynski, who had not been identified, sent a 35,000 word essay to the New York Times and Washington Post claiming to explain his motives and views of the ills of modern society. After the manifesto was published (with FBI approval) in both papers, thousands of people suggested possible suspects, including David Kaczynski, Ted's brother who recognized his brother's writing style and alerted the authorities. When the FBI searched his "shed", they found a wealth of bomb components; 40,000 handwritten journal pages that included bomb-making experiments and descriptions of Unabomber crimes; and one live bomb, ready for mailing.
