The Latvian Waffen-SS legion was founded in 1943 and was actively used by Nazi Germany in reprisal raids against partisans and the civil population on the occupied territory of Russia, Belarus and Poland. Latvia's pro-Nazi sympathisizers celebrate the memory of the Latvians serving with the Nazis with an annual parade commemorating Nazi collaborators during World War II. In 2014 an estimated 1,500 nationalists, led by a group of Waffen-SS veterans, walked through the Latvian capital to lay flowers at the Freedom monument. The parade, which has been held for two decades, is an inflamatory symbol against the Russian population. After the Russian takeover of Crimera in 2014 to allegedly protect the Russian population, Kremlin analysts fear that the same could happen in Latvia.
