American female hostage, Kayla Jean Mueller Reportedly Killed in Jordanian airstrikes on Raqqa

Article I

Islamic State (IS) militants claim that a US female hostage has been killed in a Jordanian air strike in Syria.

IS named the woman as aid worker Kayla Jean Mueller in statements posted online.

The group provided no other proof for the claim beyond pictures of the alleged site of the air strike, in Raqqa, the group's stronghold in Syria.

The White House said it was "deeply concerned" by the reports but that it has yet to verify them.

Ms Mueller was working with Syrian refugees when she was kidnapped in 2013.

'Upping the ante'

Jordan said it carried out aerial bombardments on IS targets in Syria on Thursday, including on Raqqa.

Local activists and IS sympathisers reported fresh strikes in the city on Friday, but these have not been confirmed by officials.

The strikes were carried out in response to the killing of a Jordanian fighter pilot by IS militants.

A video of Moaz al-Kasasbeh being burned alive in a cage was posted online by IS earlier this week.

He was captured by militants in December after his F-16 fighter jet crashed in Syria. The video is believed to have been filmed on 3 January.

Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said Thursday's strikes were "the beginning of our retaliation" against IS.

"We're upping the ante. We're going after them wherever they are, with everything that we have," he said.

Thousands rallied in Jordan's capital, Amman, on Friday morning in support of their government's military response.

Among those marching was Jordan's Queen Rania who told the BBC the country was "united in our horror".

She said Lt Kasasbeh's killing had made Jordanians "determined to rid the world of this evil".

The following article, dated 31 May 2013, was pubished on her work in Syria:

A man searching for his Syrian family after their refugee camp in Turkey was bombed was reunited with a 6-year-old relative thanks to Prescott resident Kayla Mueller.

After looking frantically for missing family members, he eventually found an 11-year-old girl alive at a hospital, but learned his wife had died, and could not find the boy.

The man turned to Mueller, who works in Turkey with the international humanitarian aid agency Support to Life. He gave her a video image of the boy, and she later found him after he came out of surgery at another hospital.

Mueller spoke Wednesday about her experiences to the Prescott Kiwanis Club, where her father Carl Mueller is a member.

"This story is not rare in Syria," Mueller said. "This is the reality for Syrians two and a half years on. When Syrians hear I'm an American, they ask, 'Where is the world?' All I can do is cry with them, because I don't know."

Mueller said after learning more about the situation in Syria, she was drawn to help and finds now she "can't do enough."

Mueller said she's heard of children being hurt by unexploded bombs, women being forced into early marriages, and children being forced to fight for both sides.

Children as young as 8 are working because there's no access to school, Mueller added, as schools have been targeted by the Syrian government for bombing. People who have lost their homes to the bombs and fighting are living in groups in caves and large businesses, Mueller said.

"Syrians are dying by the thousands, and they're fighting just to talk about the rights we have," Mueller said.

"For as long as I live, I will not let this suffering be normal. (I will not let this be) something we just accept," Mueller said. "It's important to stop and realize what we have, why we have it and how privileged we are. And from that place, start caring and get a lot done."

As part of her work, Mueller draws, paints and plays with Syrian children in the refugee camps and helps with psycho-social interventions.

"We give and get joy from playing with these children," Mueller said.

During one activity, Mueller said they asked the Syrian children to draw their ideal place, and each child drew his or her own home.

"They told us everything about their house," Mueller said. "They said, 'There's a tree in front of my house that I climb.' 'There's this squeaky door that my dad never fixed.'

"Half the 1.5 million refugees the U.N. has registered are children," Mueller continued. "In the chaos of waking up in the middle of the night and being shelled, we're hearing of more children being separated from their families by accident."

Kiwanis Member Kurt Vogel asked what actions Mueller would recommend.

"A no-fly zone over refugee camps would be number one," Mueller said.

The U.S. is one of the biggest donors to humanitarian relief, but Mueller said she believes the media is not portraying the situation accurately, because people would react if they saw what she has.

"The people of the United States would see that something needs to be done," Mueller said.

Mueller also works with a nongovernment organization whose name translates to Dignity to help Syrian refugee women develop the skills they need to support themselves and their family. For more information about the project and how to help, email [email protected]

Hacked documents reveal Ukrainian military in dire conditions

Hacked documents reveal Ukrainian military in dire conditions

On Jan. 28 the hacker group Cyber Berkut published a collection of documents taken from the computer of Ukraine’s chief military prosecutor, Anatoly Matios. The papers contain information about catastrophic situation inside the Ukrainian armed forces, such as extremely low morale, arms smuggling, and attempts by Ukrainian commanders to force their soldiers to fight the pro-Russian militia.

Doc.1.1

Doc.1.2

On Jan. 25, 2015, Lieutenant General Sergei Popko, the head of the “anti-terror operation” in the regions of Donetsk and Lugansk, ordered that any transmission of information about the actual losses in the zone of that operation be restricted. In addition, the personnel involved in the operation were ordered to prepare to evacuate from Kramatorsk and to set up barrier squads staffed with soldiers from volunteer battalions in order to prevent the mass desertion of Ukrainian troops from the zone of the anti-terror operation.

The document confirms that in battles in the Donbass the Ukrainian armed forces actually lost tens or hundreds of times more men than stated in the officially released figures. Ukrainian officials and operation commanders persist in denying this undeniable fact, although in the Dnipropetrovsk region bordering Novorossia they are busy expanding the existing cemetery, and the administration of the president of Ukraine is preparing to allocate at least another 80 hectares of formerly agricultural land to make room for fresh graves. (Interestingly, this amount of space will accommodate approximately 260,000 graves, a number that suspiciously matches the number of soldiers and officers that Ukrainian officials plan to call up during the next mobilization).

In this context it is no wonder that the Ukrainian mobilization is running aground. According to information provided by Yuriy Biryukov, an adviser to Poroshenko, the situation is most dire in western Ukraine, where men who receive draft notices flee the country en masse, and local authorities oblige the fugitives by providing them with transportation and establishing new bus routes to take them abroad. Thus, in the Ivano-Frankivsk region, 37% of the men who have received their conscription notices have decamped for foreign destinations.

Paradoxically, many are fleeing to Russia, which, if one believes the claims of President Poroshenko, the Ukrainian ministers, and parliament, is the “aggressor state.”

Ukrainian citizens who are unable to elude their draft summons and who have been forced to fight their compatriots are surrendering to the pro-Russian militia or simply deserting. The documents published by CyberBerkut include a telegram containing more than a hundred names of soldiers and junior officers who have taken flight from their assigned military units within the Ukrainian armed forces.

Doc.2.1

Doc.2.2

Another document indicates there is no control over the weapons being used in the zone of the punitive operation. A letter dated Dec. 25, 2014 states that “in total, more than 12,600 crimes as defined by Articles 263 (the illegal handling of weapons, ammunition, or explosives) and 264 (the theft or appropriation of military weapons, ammunition, explosives, or other substances or vehicles) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine have been recorded.”

The causes of these crimes are listed as: the failure to keep proper account of weapons and ammunition, plus the military commanders’ lack of effective control over their movements. As a countermeasure, the prosecutor proposes that military personnel surrender their weapons upon leaving the combat zone during a service rotation. This means that prior to Dec. 25 of last year, soldiers in the Ukrainian armed forces and militants in the “volunteer battalions” were under no obligation to turn in their weapons to anyone. Not surprisingly, in recent months the black market for weapons in Ukraine has ballooned to many times its previous size, although it is still unable to meet the huge demand for weapons from the terrorized general population.

Incidents such as the one described below, taken from a letter from the military commissar for the city of Dzerzhinsk, in the Donetsk region (which is under the control of the Ukrainian army) are merely a logical consequence of this state of affairs. He writes to the city’s military prosecutor, stating that on Jan. 17, 2015 unidentified Ukrainian army soldiers stopped a car carrying three civilian residents of that city, and then shot one of them.

Doc.3.1

Doc.3.2

This war against its own people, which Kiev simply cannot win, given the mood of the population and soldiers, has already resulted in the deaths of more than 5,000 civilians, has flooded Ukraine with weapons, and has practically done away with the rule of law as such. But Kiev clearly has no intention of quitting – sufficient graves have been prepared and the die-hard nationalist militants are herding the soldiers of the Ukrainian armed forces to the slaughterhouse.

TRAC Insight: Boko Haram Launched Twitter Handle

Jasmine Oppermanfalsehttp://www.trackingterrorism.org/chatter/trac-insight-boko-haram-launch-twittter...

Image Notes: Twitter Handle Logo: Alurwa_Alwuthqa

On 18 January 2015, Boko Haram launched a Twitter Handle, Alurwa Alwuthqa, https://twitter.com/search?q=Alurwa%20Alwuthqa&src=typd, as well as a media house with a similar name. The name means "The Indissolubale Link". The launch of the media house and the twitter account is significant as Boko Haram has not used social media networks to propagate the group. The twitter handle reflects similar postings to that of the Islamic State, with a focus on photos as well as a video interview with Abu Mus'ab Albarnawi who is said to be the spokesman of the group.

The twitter account reveals a close association between Boko Haram and the Islamic State, with the first indications thereof during July 2014 when the leader, Abubakar Shekau, stated support for the IS in a 16-minute video. First points of interest with the Twitter Handle:

  • There are no pictures or photos of Shekau posted;
  • The interview with Abu Mus'ab Albarnawi has been translated in English, which is a first for Boko Haram. This probably indicates that the twitter handle's content is produced, managed and distributed from outside north-east Nigeria. Internet reception and infrastructure are either lacking or weak in these areas of Nigeria;
  • Boko Haram has now initiated a propaganda campaign that previously was limited to videos featuring Shekau;
  • Boko Haram and Islamic State association is more than just a copy cat of tactics and strategies, but Boko Haram is also directly influenced by the the broader Islamic State strategy of using social networks; and
  • The launch of a media house and twitter account could be indicative of a more formalised association between Boko Haram and the Islamic State, though looking at the tactics and strategies of the group since July 2014, this is a process already initiated and being consolidated.

Insurgent group, Jama'atu AhlisSunnah Lidda'awati Waljahad, popularly known as Boko Haram has launched a new Public Relation campaign via twitter meant to win people over to its side.

The account communicating in Arabic which started twitting on the 18th of January with a message about Baga attack has over 3,000 followers.

Though there is no video of the group's leader Abubakar Shekau on the account, there is a video of an interview with one Abu Mus'ab Albarnawi who is said to be the spokesman of the group.

Both the interviewer and interviewee in the video had their faces blurred.

The Nigerian Defence Headquarters has not issued any comment on the twitter account and its content as at the time of filing this report.

First Photo Report

A first photo report on Boko Haram was posted that is similar to that of the Islamic State. The photo report is titled: "Exiled government control over Monguno", a town controlled by Boko Haram. The report contains photos of surrounding areas in a town referred to as Monguno as well as photos of fighters and weapons of Boko Haram following their assault to take control.

Background to Monguno Attack

On 25 January, Boko Haram captured Monguno and also attacked Maiduguri and Konduga. Until the attack on Maiduguri was repelled by security forces, Boko Haram had effectively cut off any routes that civilians could have used to flee Boko Haram controlled territory. On 15 January Amnesty International released satellite images providing indisputable and shocking evidence of the scale of the attack on the towns of Baga and Doron Baga by Boko Haram militants. The photo report refutes Nigerian Government claims that control has been regained from Boko Haram in Monguno:

Militants also hit two other towns Sunday, including Monguno, which lies on the shores of Lake Chad. A defense spokesman said on Sunday evening that airstrikes had been carried out to take back the town after ground troops were forced to retreat. "The operation resumed on Monguno this morning through air bombardment to dislodge the insurgents," a security source said on Monday. At least 15 soldiers were killed along with more than over 25 civilians in the town on Monday, a source said. Soldiers in Monguno said on Sunday they had fled because of the insurgents' superior fire power. Monguno lies near the larger town of Baga, where a military base was taken over by Boko Haram in early January in an attack that left scores of civilians dead. (Source: Voice of America).

The following map shows the location of Monguno:
