Sham al-islam was established during August 2013 in the coastal region of Salma in Syria, by Brahim Benchekroune (aka Abu Ahmad al-Muhajir) a veteran Moroccan jihadist and former Guantanamo inmate. Benchekroune created accounts on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to attract Moroccans to his new jihadist movement.
