Salah Abdeslam, the sole survivor of the Paris attackers' core group, was extradited to France from Belgium early on 27 April 2016. Abdeslam was transferred from Brussels to Paris by helicopter, under the supervision of the GIGN, a French special operations unit. The operation was very secretive, with little details released to the media, which shows the high level of risk expected around this operation. Authorities feared the terrorist suspect may try to escape, or the intervention of a terrorist commando sent to free Abdeslam.
