The disparity in economic development levels between the Niger Delta and other regions in the country and local communities in the Niger Delta been marginalized from participation and benefiting from the oil industry has seen a major eruption of the militarized violence, crime and insecurity in the Niger Delta and the resultant state-sponsored repression of local armed resistance.
